Race-Baiting Tactics of Distractor in Chief Must Be Resisted and Rejected
A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
Do not be afraid of that man behind the curtain in the White House.
It’s only Donald Trump, the Distractor in Chief, pushing the “send” button on his computer, spreading division and pain across the country.
His tweet attacking the four United States congresswomen of color was racist. It was not reckless. He knew exactly what he was doing.
We cannot allow him to succeed. We cannot fall for his flimflam. We must resist and reject his repeated attempts to pull America back and down.
Our response must be bigger than his intent. If we vote our numbers and our needs, it will be and we the people will take back our house.
Trump’s tweets attacking the congresswomen and his policies of separating families at the border and striking fear in the hearts of immigrants with his chilling call for raids, roundups and mass deportations are part of a strategy to distract, divide and conquer.
Race-baiting is his go-to tactic. He used it with President Obama, challenging his citizenship as one of the loudest voices in the birther movement. He used it in his previous attacks on Congresswomen Maxine Waters, Frederica Wilson, African American female sportswriters – at least 10 prominent women of color.
It is clear, strong, intelligent, independent, accomplished women intimidate him.
Religious leaders must stand up and speak out. People of all faith traditions must oppose and condemn Trump’s racist, misogynistic and xenophobic words and deeds. Silence is betrayal of the American promise and moral authority. Saying nothing is saying a lot.
Trump is poisoning the well-stream of America. What’s happening on the border is an atrocity. What’s coming out of the White House, a disgrace.
